FEEL BLUE ALL SUMMER LONG!!!

Eating well in summer can be tricky - swimwear and skimpy frocks means we want to keep trim, but Christmas, New Year and party season can make it pretty hard! The good news is there is so much amazing fruit in season and we love fresh blueberries as a delicious summer treat.

During this season they are bursting with flavour, delivering a hit of sweetness to whatever dish you add them to. Blueberries are not just scrumptious, they are also incredibly nutritious and are rich in the cancer-fighting antioxidants anthocyanins and ellagic acid. Those antioxidants earn blueberries the top spot on the list of fruits and vegetables that can counter the effects of aging.

So don’t ignore your blueberry addiction - savour them one berry at a time or try some of these yummy blueberry recipes guilt free!

Breakfast:
Blueberry and Ricotta Pancakes
(a special brekky for that special someone after a big night!)

Lunch:
Chicken and Blueberry Pasta Salad
(make a big batch and take it to the Boxing Day BBQ)

Dinner:
Turkey with Blueberry Sauce
(a yummy and healthy addition to your Christmas banquet)

Dessert:
Blueberry-Cinnamon Swirl Ice Cream
(keep dessert light on a sweltering Aussie summer's night)

Drink: Blueberry-Ginger Bellini
(Okay, you've been good, so here's a blueberry version of everyone's favourite course - the cocktail. What?! Cocktails are a food group...)

Who's hungry now?!

INFINITY GUITARS - A DYNAMIC ROUTINE FROM POLE EVOLUTION DANCE COMPANY

Performed at Carriageworks December 2010 as part of the show 'Spiral Rhythms' and choreographed by Studio Verve instructor Rani Seckold, the brief for this piece, "Infinity Guitars" was to convey something big, energetic and fun. Rani's vision was to make the most of each of the female dancer's strengths and individual backgrounds, but when our male guest performers came onto the scene, Rani worked them into her concept and the choreography naturally evolved from there with some amazing partner work. There is a lot happening in this routine but Rani definitely fulfilled her brief, delivering a dynamic piece that was a 'Spiral Rhythms' audience favourite, bringing the house down and closing the first half of show. Little did we know there were talent scouts in the audience who brought this piece to the attention of 'Australia's Got Talent' producers who granted it automatic entry into the 2011 series! Unfortunately due to the large cast of dancers and conflicting schedules we were unable to commit, but we're excited to now have the opportunity to share 'Infinity Guitars' with everyone. Enjoy!

NATASHA WANG VISITS STUDIO VERVE!

International pole dance superstar Natasha Wang dropped by Studio Verve on her recent visit to Australia to conduct a couple of workshops for our instructors, advanced students and some welcome guest participants. She threw challenge after challenge at us, but our talented girls didn't bat an eye (although we did leave with a few bruised feet from the side climb)!

All up, everyone had a ball and it was great to have one the world's best (and nicest!) performers give us some awesome new tricks and transitions to incorporate into our training...just in time for Open Night!!

The first challenge of the workshop - here we go!

STRETCHING vs. FLEXIBILITY: WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?!

As we become more passionate about Pole, we start to become much more body-aware and begin to set ourselves new goals in terms of strength and flexibility. We want to be flexible so we can achieve advanced pole moves and positions, and even dancers who are already flexible work hard to ‘stretch’ their limits further. Regular stretching helps with balance, posture and strength and can be done by anyone at any age.

Flexibility is certainly important and increasing it will allow you to extend your repertoire of Pole skills further, but we need to achieve it in the safest way possible and we must always work within our own range of movement, and not push our bodies further than they are able, just so we can achieve a particular shape. This is dangerous, should not be encouraged as safe practice and is a common cause of injury amongst athletes, particularly over-eager pole dance students!

We are taught to always stretch before our PoleFit® class and before any workout, pole or other, but stretching to warm up our body for action and stretching to specifically increase our general flexibility are two very different things. To increase flexibility takes time and care, and cannot be achieved from 5 minutes of static stretching during class warm-up. At Studio Verve® we offer a 1-hour Stretch & Flex class to help you work on your own personal target areas but here is some info and tips that may help you to better understand the concept of ‘stretching’ and get you a bit more body aware:

·         What are we stretching?
When we stretch, we usually think of the muscles and this is where you feel sore in the days following a stretch class. But to be flexible, we actually need everything in the body parts we are moving to be able to stretch and slide past each other. This includes the muscles, the tendons at the ends of the muscles, the ligaments of the joints, the nerves, and the fascia, which is the fine tissue which surrounds, supports and connects all of the structures in the body. Many small movements at all of these different places add up to make the overall larger movement you are performing and when you move or stretch, all of these parts come into play.

·         What’s the difference between stretching for class and stretching to become more flexible?
Maintenance stretching should be done slowly without bouncing. The purpose of maintenance stretching is to maintain your current level of flexibility and reduce tightness in the muscle, like we do before every PoleFit® class (e.g., stretching our biceps on the poles, pulling our foot up behind the body to stretch the quads).

Developmental stretching aims to improve your current level of flexibility. So, for example if you are unable to touch your toes at present, a developmental hamstring stretch should, over time, improve your flexibility levels and eventually allow you to touch your toes. A developmental stretch is performed by increasing the stretch by a fraction until you feel the mild tension in the muscle again; hold this position and when the tension eases repeat again. Again, this should be done with control and without bouncing. To see any noticeable gains in flexibility, you should stretch a few times a week and flexibility gains can be seen in as little as two weeks.
·         Warm up first
You need to do at least 5-10 minutes of aerobic-type activity before having a good stretch. After a PoleFit® class is a good time to stretch as you are already warm.
·         Breathe
Keep breathing while stretching, slow and easy. Never hold your breath.
·         Alignment
Always do your stretches with correct alignment (Twee can help you with this if you’re unsure).
·         Relax
Stay relaxed while you are stretching. It is easy to tense up, but you need to relax to get the most out of your stretch session.
·         Strength and control
Don’t push for big changes in your flexibility over a short period of time. It is useless to become flexible without building the strength and control to be able to use it, as this can lead to pain and injury. Instead, aim for a steady, gradual improvement.

Finally, the number one thing to remember is to respect your body – know your limits, be mindful of pre-existing injuries and always ask Twee or one of your friendly instructors to help you if you’re unsure of anything. With passion, commitment and safe practice, you’ll increase your flexibility in no time and you’ll push your Pole skills to the next level, which is, after all, what we’re all aiming for!!

Studio Verve’s® Stretch & Flex class currently runs on Mondays at 8pm and can be taken as an 8-week or 4-week Enhancement Course, or can be taken as one-off. Come and try it out and see how great you’ll feel afterwards – (02) 92819332 or bookings@studioverve.com.au.

BODY AND SOUL

With spring here and that summer sunshine well and truly now within reach, all our minds begin to return, after what felt like an endless winter huddled under opaques, long sleeves and bulky jackets, to health and fitness. Singlet tops, swimmers and a long party season full of skimpy frocks is on the horizon yet again and we all naturally start thinking about how to go about toning up and trimming down. This month, Studio Verve was featured in The Sunday Telegraph’s Body and Soul magazine as part of a fitness and eating plan undertaken by journalist and Studio Verve student, Victoria Hannaford.

So, this got us considering ‘diets’ and thinking about snacks and ‘sweating it out’ long term with a plan that everyone can implement not just for the sake of bikini season, but for good!
The pressure to look a certain way has filtered down from Hollywood and the media for as long as most of us can remember and being thin is just as much a focus nowadays as looking youthful. But not all of the routes for getting to our goal weight are always the safest and they are often as faddish and fashionable as the celebs that pioneer them. From the Zone’s carb-friendly, protein rich system to the almost comical baby food diet (I promise, I'm not making that one up), just thinking about what is best for us should be considered a workout in itself! And when many of these diets having seriously dangerous health side-effects ranging from iron deficiency to osteoporosis, you’d be forgiven for thinking ‘stuff it all’ and reaching for the Maltesers. I mean, seriously – some lemon juice and cayenne pepper does NOT a meal make.
More than ever, our busy lives have become about searching for simplicity. We simplify the way we work, the way we shop and even the way we communicate – clicking the ‘LIKE’ button has replaced going for a coffee and a chat. But thinking simply about how we take care of ourselves doesn’t seem to be quite as popular.
Personally, I'm from the school of eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full, eat your fruit and veg, drink plenty of water and treat yourself once an hour every so often. And when it comes to working out, incidental is key and if it feels like a chore, don’t do it – life’s too short to be bored in your free time! Sometimes though, this ‘lifestyle plan’ can take some willpower and it doesn’t take into account a bad day at work, a break up or ‘that time of the month’. So for those of us who need a tad more structure, the eating plan devised for Victoria by nutritionist Lisa Guy seems pretty well-balanced and adaptable for the vegos, vegans and pescaterians among us.
And in terms of physical activity, well, anyone who knows me knows that before 2007 whenever I got the urge to exercise, I sat down until it passed. Then I found my beloved Studio Verve and, like so many other women (and men!) I became addicted to how fun it was without even realising how much my body had changed. After losing 20kgs from PoleFit® classes alone, I'm living proof of how it can change your body and your life.

So, with all this in mind, we’re now looking for expressions of interest from students willing to undertake a 6-week fitness plan incorporating classes at Studio Verve. If you’ve been vowing to lose weight or get fit, why not start now in time for summer? Victoria lost inches; what could this mean for you?! It’s first in, best dressed and there’s more info to come, but I can tell you that the SV instructors will be along for the ride and there’s an awesome prize at the end for one very lucky student! If you’re keen to get involved, email us a bookings@studioverve.com.au.

POLE EVOLUTION™ DEBUTS 'FORM 3' AT SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY

Sydney Theatre Company was the setting for Pole Reflections and what ended up being a spectacular display of international pole dance and Chinese pole talent on Saturday 30 July. The night saw many facets of the pole performance world on one stage, starting with the hugely talented Matty Shields with an artistic bird-inspired indigenous routine, concluding with Pole Evolution™ Dance Company’s middle eastern-flavoured Form 3 and with a great deal of diversity amongst the routines in between!
The beautifully warm night was befitting of the wonderful performance space that has seen some of Australia’s most famous faces tread the boards.
Pole Evolution™ were rehearsing to the very end (literally, with Jen, Twee and Emily stretching for about 2 hours up in the green room at STC!) and all the hard work, late nights and injuries paid off for what turned out to be an impassioned performance full of feeling and the conveying the emotions behind Form 3 – strength, love and joy.
Lots of our beautiful Studio Verve™ Polefit® students showed up on the night to offer their love and support and the overwhelming positive feedback for Form 3 was that the performance was stirring and original, with many of our team saying that the never-before-seen end pose was truly awe-inspiring.

A huge thank you to all the Verve™ boys and girls who came out in force and shared the love with the Pole Evolution™ dancers. And an even bigger thank you to the families and partners of Jen, Twee and Em, who cheered them on not just on the night but throughout all the months of rehearsals, hard work and dinnertime absences!

Pole Evolution™ Dance Company’s aim is to challenge and entertain audiences with a new vision in pole dancing and seeks to redefine what people think of as the norm, and we look forward to bringing our next exciting company performance to our fans and supporters soon. POLE EVOLUTION™ DANCE COMPANY at POLE REFLECTIONS INTERNATIONAL SHOWCASE

Pole Evolution™ Dance Company is proud to debut its latest work, Form 3 at Pole Reflections International Showcase at Sydney Theatre Company on July 30th.

Beautifully abstract, this piece is a breathtaking first movement in a creative new project for the company that seeks to push the artistic content and depth of the narrative to produce a highly visual and touching work.

Choreographed and performed by principal dancers Jennifer Critelli, ThuyAnh Phan and Emily Boughton, Form 3 explores fluid contemporary and lyrical pole movements to haunting middle eastern vocals and earthy rhythms.

Responding to one another’s energy, the three dancers flow organically in and out of complex shapes that mix the arcs and lines of classical ballet with the strength, athleticism and control of pole dance.

At once highly physical and masterfully simplistic, Form 3 is a startlingly captivating, entrancing and intensely emotive modern work that is not to be missed.
